This project is partially funded by the Windham Foundation
Mixed-use buildings (commercial, institutional, and residential shared occupancy), common in Vermont towns, provide effective use of built resources, preserve historic built environments, and efficiently meet the needs of occupants. However, they face a number of unique challenges when faced with meeting the mandates in the Universal Recycling Law (Act 148).
This project identifies and addresses these challenges and will work within downtown Brattleboro to create a pilot that will then be shared throughout Vermont. Project participants receive free technical assistance in food waste reduction and diversion (to composting) for their commercial and residential tenants, as well as cost effective ways to integrate these services with current waste and recycling practices.
Results from this pilot project will be shared state-wide through a webinar and case studies.
